STEM Summer camps – Registration open for July and August – Ages 8-17

LEGO camp dates: July 2, 3, 4, or 5, August 19, 20, or 22.

VIRTUAL REALITY camp date: August 21.

Registration: https://form.jotform.com/241366548774266
Day camps last 3 hours, from 10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm, with a snack in between.

Details: LEGO camps: (age 8+) participants use LEGO Spike sets to build a robot, code it with Scratch, and then test and improve their creations. Each workshop consists of a challenge designed to teach students the concepts that make up basic robotics and mechanical engineering. Challenges are geared toward a student who has never programmed or built a robot before. Choose your challenge!
• The Sumo-Bot Competition: This challenge is always a favorite; campers will build their robot to wrestle an opposing robot out of a ring. Flippers and pushers are all allowed!
• Line Follower Challenge: The camper’s robot must be programmed to follow a black line. The most precise instead of the fastest robot wins.
• Maze Challenge: To level up their robotics skills, the campers will be asked to program their robot so that it completes a maze.

Details: VIRTUAL REALITY camp: (age 10+) This is a game development workshop where participants create their own 3D objects, structures, avatars, buildings, etc. using TinkerCad. Those objects are then loaded into a pre-made VR space that participants can view and explore using VR headsets. The goal of this workshop is to learn to create 3D objects and render them in Virtual Reality, not to play games on VR. Computers, phones, and VR headsets are provided.

Thanks to the Elizabeth Kelly Foundation and Lanark County for founding these programs

This program will run through July & August, and is for children ages 7 to 10, at Almonte & Pakenham branches.

Each child registers for a 4-week period, at one hour/week.

The purpose of this program is to help children gain confidence in their reading ability, instill a love of reading, and lessen summer learning loss. Supervised by library staff, each child is matched with an adult volunteer. The buddies meet at the library for one hour each week, initially for 4 weeks, but the program can be extended beyond, if the child and volunteer are interested. Due to limited enrolment, we require parents to commit for the initial 4-week period. Register here https://form.jotform.com/240505693922256

All experience levels preferred. Come check out the group! Learn and share.

The library’s printer is a Prusa i3 MK3 that uses PETG filament. FREE 3D printing at the library is funded by the Elizabeth Kelly Foundation www.ekellylibraryfoundation.caThe library’s Youtube channel has videos about choosing, using & maintaining a 3D printer, and click here for a few further resources.
