Love the library? Join the Board! We are seeking applications for new Board members.

The Mississippi Mills Public Library Board has a Board of Trustees composed of 9 individuals, the majority being community members at large with one member of Council. Trustees are appointed by The Town of Mississippi Mills Council for a term of 4 years.

The Library is now seeking passionate community members who are interested in applying for the next session of the Library Board (2014-2018).

 A little bit about the Mississippi Mills Public Library:

Operating from two branches, one in Almonte and one in Pakenham, the Library serves all of the Town of Mississippi Mills. Both branches are warm, friendly and inviting spaces providing exciting opportunities for people to gather and share ideas. With an operating budget of close to $545,000 the Library offers a wide range of library services including rich, diverse collections; access to technology and programming for all ages. In 2013, over 70% or Mississippi Mills residents had a library card; we offered over 500 programmes with over 5800 people attending them. Our total annual circulation for 2013 was close to 105,000!

Why join the Board of Trustees?

The main reason to join is you love the Public Library! Consider:

  • We are growing! People love our collections in all formats from print to digital.
  • We are looking at possible expansion in both locations.
  • We are developing our new Strategic Plan! The library is no longer just a place to borrow books, it’s a key community centre – a place to meet, to access the internet (through our public computers or through wifi), to rent a room, to do research or pursue genealogy, to attend public lectures, nurture children, develop literacy… and more! This is your chance to provide a voice to our Public Library Service.

This is your opportunity to:

  • Promote a positive relationship between the Library Board and Council.
  • Develop and promote what our Public Library can do for our community.
  • Represent the different interests, concerns and attitudes of Mississippi Mills residents.

What does a Trustee do?

The Board of Trustees provides oversight to the Library’s operations by setting goals and objectives focusing on community needs; establishing policies for governance, operations, and effective library services; budgets; and evaluating Library performance and services.

Above all, Trustees advocate for the Library and all of its services. Ultimately the Library Board is the face and voice of the Library community and as such Library Board Trustees speak favourably about the library and are knowledgeable about Library services and funding.

What skills can I bring?

Each Board Trustee often brings a unique perspective and set of skills. Can you offer any of the following skill sets:

  • Fundraising
  • Finance or Budgeting
  • Strategic Planning
  • Oversight of Capital Projects

Schedule for Board Meetings

The Board meets the last Wednesday of every month except July and August. Meetings typically run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and meetings rotate between the Almonte and Pakenham Branches.

Sub-Committee meeting times vary based on need.

Time Commitment

Aside from Board meetings, Trustees spend time:

  • Reviewing the monthly board meeting packages distributed the week before the meeting
  • Sitting on a sub-committee
  • Representing the Board or volunteering at various library events (book sales, special programming or events)
  • Participating in Library associations, including conference attendance if desired

Board Trustees play a critical role that requires leadership, fundraising and time; how much time can vary – Board activity can ramp up in response to particular projects and/or planning. The bulk of meetings and duties are fulfilled outside of normal business hours.


Each new Board member will be provided with a detailed resource “The Library Board Development Kit” published by the Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS). In the first year of term, each Board meeting may include one chapter review from this information kit. Other training will be provided on an as needed basis.

The Public Library Act requires that you be

  • At least 18 years old
  • A Canadian citizen
  • A resident of the Municipality
  • Not employed by your library board or your Municipality
